There are two sides to the Del Taco menu. There is the budget side, where Buck & Under favorites and other relatively inexpensive fare reign supreme. Always thinking about value, this is where I make most of my buying decisions. But there is another side, one I admit I rarely visit, which I call The Land of the Premiums. Most fast food restaurants have a Land of the Premiums. At Del Taco, this is where the most common word spoken is "Macho." Macho Beef Burrito. Macho Chicken Burrito. The occasional steak or fish premium taco or burrito. All these live in the Land of the Premiums and carry a price to match, typically in the $4 and up range.
Enter the latest category of premium menu items at Del Taco: The EPIC series. A set of four offerings with names that are as much mouthfuls as the burritos themselves. The Epic Steak & Potato Burrito, The Epic Chicken Chipotle Ranch Burrito, the Epic Cali Steak & Guac Burrito (that one must be conforming to some invisible character limit) and the flagship: The Epic Grilled Chicken Avocado Burrito.

Regular readers of FastFoodSource know that I occasionally receive promotional stuff from restaurants when they are announcing a new product. Nobody else is better at this than the PR folks at Del Taco, who infamously sent me a red box full of feathers and a rubber turkey to tout their new turkey meat options and another red box full of anniversary stuff last year. This mystery package is a bit less substantial, being a padded shiny green envelope. What could possibly be inside?
On a recent trip to Orlando I stopped by local fast food chain Pollo Tropical and gave a test drive to a new menu item, the Tangy Pineapple Chicken Wrap. Inexpensively proced at $5.69 for a combo which included a small side item and a drink, the meal arrived hot and ready to devour.
Pollo Tropical is a small regional fast food restaurant that began in 1988 with its first location in Miami. The fast food chain now has stores in Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, and a handful of international locations in the Caribbean and Latin America. Like the Mexican chain El Pollo Loco on the West Coast, Pollo Tropical specializes in a variety of grilled chicken, beef, and pork dishes, but with a distinctly international Caribbean vibe.
Pollo Tropical has a large menu of specialties, including roasted pork, "Caribbean" ribs, chicken wraps, and salads. One of the unique features is a great salsa and condiment bar, with quite an extensive array of flavors to add to your already flavorful order.
I don't make it to Cosi much. But on a recent trip to Chicago, I stopped in to give the Buffalo Bleu a try. I am a big fan of buffalo chicken flavored sandwiches and wraps. The Cosi Buffalo Bleu is a fast food sandwich that tastes distinctly un-fast foody.
The sandwich was served on multi-grain bread. However, it is more of a wrap than a sandwich, with the bread closed up on one side taco-style. Here's the inside:
