Who doesn't like a good hot dog? Sonic has a small line-up of hot dogs on their menu and here I review two, the All American and the Chili Cheese Coney.
The All American Dog is just like you'd imagine, ketchup, mustard, relish, and chopped onions on a simple dog. No frills, no drama. If you like these toppings on your hot dog then you will have nothing to complain about. The hot dog itself is pretty "standard" in size, although they also have a footlong option if you desire. The bun was soft, fresh-tasting, and did its job of holding in its contents.
It's the first Wednesday of the month and time for another What Was It? This one is easy.
During a recent trip to Dallas I tried a burger that isn't nationwide: The Homestyle Quarter Pounder. It arrived in this fun cowboy wrapper shown above. This is your basic Quarter Pounder mod, and we've reviewed plenty of them in the past as McDonald's loves to play with toppings on their mid-sized staple.
Jack in the Box has been advertising their new fast food "Brewhouse Bacon Burger" as the kind of burger you'd find in a pub. This angle is eerily similar to the original Six Dollar Burger pitch from Carl's Jr., which claimed you'd get the same substantial burger you'd pay $6 for at a sit-down restaurant (read "Chili's") but at a lower price. We know how that worked out for the Star when burger prices crept up and the company had to adopt sister chain Hardee's "Thickburger" moniker. In this case, Jack wisely steers clear of the pricing angle. Marketing aside, what are you actually getting for your money and what does it taste like?
Dickey's Barbecue Pit's Deal of the Day has changed. They used to offer a menu item plus two sides, bread, pickles & onions, and a Big Yellow Cup for a special price each day, Monday through Saturday. We've been lamenting the slow but steady increase on the price of this deal over the last couple of years, from $7.95 to $8.95 to $9.95. Likely in an effort to avoid passing the $10 mark, the fast food bbq chain has changed what you get in the daily deal.
At my local Dickey's they've removed the poster that displayed all the deals you can get each day and have replaced it with a chalkboard. The board displays today's deal as well as a sort of manager's special and a third select promo. The deal of the day was what I expected for a Tuesday: 3 Rib Plate. However, you now get the main menu item, ONE side, bread, and a Big Yellow Cup for $7.99. You now have to ask for pickles and onions, although in my case they also had some over by the sauces for self-service.
Doing the math really quickly, a side is $2.50, which would put the old Deal at $10.49.
This isn't surprising or in anyway misleading. It's just a trend and something we've seen before from other fast food restaurants. We've updated the menu to reflect the new pricing and also have listed the old daily deals sequence to help you predict what should be on the chalkboard.
