wendys 4 for 4

Fast food restaurants have started a new trend, bundling smaller "value" items into a combo meal at a bargain price, usually in the $4 to $5 range. We reviewed one of the early trendsetters last summer when Taco Bell rolled out boxed items including the Bacon Club Chalupa Big Box. But, at least among the burger joints, the focus seems to be on a $4 price point.

Wendy's recently rolled out a 4 for $4 promotion which includes a Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger, four chicken nuggets, small fries, and a value soft drink. Separately on the regular Wendy's value menu, the sandwich would cost $1.89 and the other items are 99 cents each. So you can look at this a number of ways. Either say they're discounting the burger and you're getting a deal or be cynical and say the burger should've been 99 cents too and you're actually paying what you should for these four little items. Either way, don't expect to get filled up here.

The Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger, as the name implies, is a small cheeseburger with bacon, lettuce, tomato, ketchup and mayo. I think there might've been pickles and onion but it was gone before I could check. Equally fast to consume are four chicken nuggets. This is such a small serving they don't even fill up the cardboard container they come in, as you can see above.

Overall, I found this bundle to be fine. But I would probably be happier mixing and matching 99 cent items off the existing menu. Especially since I was taking the food home, I could've put the beverage cost toward another small burger. Wendy's certainly hopes I won't do that, as they certainly make more pushing people toward the bundle. Not that anything's wrong with it, but I didn't feel like Wendy's gave me anything to get excited about for the price. Certainly not as much as the aforementioned Taco Bell Big Box that was much more filling.

I'll look to review some of the other bundled offerings in the weeks ahead and we'll watch this trend as it plays out in 2016.
