Like we did last year, here's a look at how some common fast food coupons changed from the beginning to the end of 2016. And again, we're using the ubiquitous Arby's and Carl's Jr. coupons that appear in my mailbox like clockwork every two or three weeks. First, let's take a look at Arby's. Here's a 2-for special that expired on December 31, 2015 for both the Beef 'n Cheddar and the French Dip 'n Swiss:
And now, here they are at the end of September, 2016 (they match the others I have that I did't scan but which expired on 12/31/16):
Wahoo! the prices have actually gone down over the year. This marks the second year that these two sandwiches remained relatively flat, as they fluctuated by about the same amount in 2015. That is if you don't count the brief time in June 2015 when the 2 Beef 'n Cheddars flirted with a $6 price point. Crazy talk.
What's the driver? Well, these particular sandwiches are basic - just meat, cheese and a sauce. No garden toppings to fluctuate, which allows Arby's to maintain a pretty steady price point. Either that, or they're shaving the meat thinner! But we can test that next year by locking in the published weight on both of these sandwiches now: the Beef 'n Cheddar has a serving weight of 195 grams, while the French Dip & Swiss weighs 327 grams. Also note, it's French Dip & Swiss, not French Dip 'n Swiss, as the coupon makers above seem to still sneak in every once in awhile.
