Rolling out today are Burger King's new Grilled Dogs. Two all-beef hot dog variants are offered. The Classic comes with ketchup, mustard, relish, and onions. The Chili Cheese comes with, well, chili and cheese. I tried them both.

The Classic Grilled dog came loaded, just the way I like it. In the commercial (below) Snoop Dogg said that the buns were "all fluffy and whatnot." He is right, but it's not an extraordinary bun. However, it is sized right for the dog, holding onto the ingredients all the way through to the last bite. The all-beef hot dog tasted savory and meaty, but not over-the-top. It doesn't have the thick casing of a designer dog, but it does taste flame-grilled. The meat is sliced down the middle to help the grilling go all the way through.

The Chili Cheese Grilled Dog is equally tasty. This is the first time I can recall chili being offered at Burger King, and they would do well to consider adding this chili to some of the burgers. The chili was also savory, meaty, and had some beans to boot. They sprinkle some slided cheddar cheese across the top and that melted nicely into the dog, making the dog taste right. Comparing it with the Sonic Chili Cheese Coney or the Wienerschnitzel Chili Cheese Dog, I'd say it's a toss-up, which is saying something for a new entrant into the hot dog space. I'd probably give the edge to Wienerschnitzel for their chili only because I am partial to it, but I think I like the chili combined with the taste of the Burger King dog better.

Overall, I was impressed with these dogs. Two of them were the right size for lunch. One might not fill you up, unless you get fries or another side. But I was left scratching my head as to what Burger King is trying to do by introducing hot dogs at all. This didn't go anywhere at Carl's Jr., and they started with hot dogs 50 years ago. Not sure how Burger King will make it work, but we'll have to see. Meanwhile, it's a nice alternative to the Whopper.
