jack in the box ribeye

I wanted to like Jack in the Box's new Ribeye Burgers. Part of a trend toward gourmet (think McDonald's Signature lineup) these burgers usually hinge on one or two premium features to an otherwise standard fast food sandwich. In this case the hook is "made with 100% ribeye." How'd they taste? Read on.

For this review my wife and I tried both offerings, the All American and the Havarti & Grilled Onion. The American is described on Jack's website as "ribeye beef with provolone cheese, spring mix, red onions, hand sliced tomato, and real mayo all on an artisan potato bun." Here's what it looks like in the beauty shot and below that what I received.

Quite a contrast. The All American was dry and tasteless, even with the mayo. I wouldn't call the ribeye beef an improvement over the other patty offerings at Jack in the Box. In fact, the whole sandwich was just dull. The powdery feel of the artisan bun didn't help matters either. As a side note, it's strange to me that a burger called the "All American" would not come with American cheese. Provolone, obviously another attempt at plussing up this sandwich, was an awkward choice. Or the name was. Whatever.

The Havarti & Grilled Onion Ribeye Burger didn't fare any better. My wife found it equally drab. This one is described on the Jack in the Box website as having "100% ribeye beef* patty, seasoned to perfection and topped with creamy havarti cheese, grilled onions, hand sliced tomato, real mayo, and a red wine glaze on an artisan potato bun." On the plus side, she appreciated that they were generous with the tomato slices. But the burger was smallish and would've benefitted from dijon or horseradish in lieu of mayo.

The bottom line is if we hadn't used a 2-for-$5 coupon we would've felt ripped off.
