whatwasit

Welcome to another edition of What Was It? Wednesday. This classic fast food restaurant building shape was common for this chain throughout the late '80's and into the '90's.

arbys buffalo chicken

Arby's loves to experiment with mixing and matching their meats about as much as Taco Bell does with their six main ingredients. The latest experiment: taking the existing fried chicken breast from the delicious Chicken, Bacon & Swiss and drenching it in buffalo sauce. How is it? Yummy.

zaxbys wings and things

Zaxby's Wings & Things meal consists of five traditional or five boneless wings, three Chicken Fingerz, crinkle fries, Texas toast and a drink. You also get three decent sized pieces of celery and two sauces: the Zax Sauce and Ranch.

pioneer chicken buttons

At the Valley Relics museum in California's San Fernando Valley there's a great little display case with some tasty souvenirs of the best fast food fried chicken chain ever - Pioneer Chicken. While there are still a couple of stores still keeping the dream alive, the chain has mostly faded into memory. but here, for those who remember, is a shot I took of some employee buttons that were on display in the museum. The buttons are sitting on top of an employee uniform for added fun.

For those of you who grew up in the Valley, the Valley Relics museum is worth an hour of your time. It's a small museum in an industrial park in Chatsworth. The museum is free (donations welcome) and only open for a few hours on Saturdays, but they do operate a very active Facebook page as well.

coke freestyle

When these Coke Freestyle self-service soft drink dispensers started popping up in fast food and quick-service restaurants I had three initial thoughts:

  1. Why couldn't Pepsi do something like this? (Yeah, I like Pepsi)
  2. Why is the dang touch screen so insensitive? (The newer machines are more responsive)
  3. Why isn't there a way to store my favorite drink mix so the machine "knows" what I want when I walk up?

Well, I am happy to report that #3 has been addressed with a new app for iOS and Android that allows you to create drink mixes and send them through the air to a machine. And it does it, for the most part, the same way I would design it. Here's how it works:
